Avenger 220 – Go for it (Suckheads!)

Well the new bike is finally launched! By now you would have probably heard a lot of reviews about how the bike is so much better and blah blah blah! Here’s a gentle kick on the kickless bike… People said it would be a better bike “to ride to hills!”

For me the ONLY noteworthy changes on the bikes are

  1. The full DC electrical (Learn a thing TVS!)
  2. Wait a minute, I cant recollect anything!

I hope you weren’t hoping I would appreciate the battery indicator..! Isn’t the dying horn an indicator enough?

Some Engine specs:

Avenger 220

  • Engine : 4 stroke, Single Cylinder, Air cooled with Oil Cooler
  • Bore X Stroke : 67.00mm x 62.40mm
  • Max. Net Power : 19.03 PS at 8500 rpm
  • Max. Net Torque : 17.5 Nm at 7000pm
  •  Fueling: Carburetor – Unknown (But last notes confirmed it wasn’t the UCD32)

 Pulsar 220 DTSi Engine

  •  Engine : 4 stroke, Single Cylinder, Air cooled with Oil Cooler
  •  Bore(mm)xStroke(mm): 67×62.4
  •  Max. Power (Ps@RPM): 21.04@8500
  •  Max. Torque(NM@RPM): 19.12@7000
  •  Fueling: Carburetor – UCAL UCD 32

The bike sports the same mill from P220, and both generate its peak output at the exact same RPM level. Wow! So much for tuning the fat-arse, bulkier Avenger for ‘cruising’. The only difference on the P220 is the bigger carb.

The only other escape-excuse for “tuning” would be a mother of all sprockets on the bike, but I wonder how much they can gain from it…. Is there a suitable sprocket from p150 to p220? I guess yes! (Figure out!)

It’s a disappointing upgrade, Bajaj still doing the same mistake of thinking that the cubic capacity is the ONLY thing that people want. How much does the 220S sells again? Ever wondered why the P200 became a rage overnight? –  The reason: (a bit of) fresher looks!

I, for one would have loved to have the Avenger 220 with simple modifications more on the styling side…. That would have been a blow to the other macho bike, the FZ.

Conspiracy theories suggest that the A220 is an attempt to flush out the 220 DTSi 2 valved mill! So that’s why my humble request (which is contradictory to what I always preach: Don’t buy stupid upgrades!)– GO AHEAD! Buy the damn thing suck heads….! Coz, either the conspiracy theory would turn good, and we would see a 4 valved head OR the bigger pulsar sooner! OR we would help Bajaj make money and invest on upgrading the arsenal. So what if it means that some of us look stupid! (US – does not include me for sure! So may be you!)

So here’s some genuine advice,

If you want a cruiser styled bike, which is reliable as compared to the RE lineage… (RE will still get you chicks!) , if your previous bike was a less than 180CC bike, and you now want to upgrade desperately….. go for the A220

For everyone else, if you had a reason to NOT to upgrade to the P220, join the queue, and wait for something bigger, better than a paint\swap job.
