Honda CBR150R – will it come to India..

Well, to be honest the correct answer to it is I don’t know.. What this post is about is logical reasoning from my limited understanding of the Indian two wheeler scene.

The company: Honda motorcycles and scooters India..
The product: the recently unveiled iteration of the cbr150r..

The bike looks like a cosmetic make over of the old cbr… And mind you cosmetic that kicks the r15 in its nuts kind of fantastic looks. CBRish side panels, VFRish front headlamp = one kick ass looking bike.

If it comes to India it would be an awesome competition to the zmr and the r15.. And probably the Mojo too…

Why it should come to India..
Much bigger a market, makes a neat addition tp HMSIs arsenal. Kicks the zmr and yet sticks to the low cubic capacity range. It would up the ante for TVS and BAJAJ… Who knows, we might just see a nice battle of sorts between Honda and Yamaha here too!

Why it might NOT come to India..
1. Honda is a stubborn company that believes it knows what India wants, but favors more on its ability to judge what India deserves (or what they think we deserve)
A proof of that is the same iteration of unicorn being repeated without any significant change to its mill. You see Honda is not a company that will play with 20cc upgrades.. The same iteration of Scooters only reinforces it.
So why doesn’t India deserve the cbr…
* Too high rev a engine for Indian roads
* Too high compression a engine for Indian fuels.. Ever wondered why activa, dio, unicorn, shine and probably other Honda engines sport a magical constant compression ratio of 9.1:1?
* The small(purely as a %) money equipped chunk in India care a rats arse about how the bike performs. We will buy anything that looks good. Even if it meant its performance not upto its looks.

2. Every auto enthusiast will tell you that a bigger, cheaper Honda is being prepared. Infact if my source of info is correct, a substantial three figured number of bikes has already been assembled in the gurgaon facility. The specs are not difficult to guess. Its a single cylinder again, as we don’t need/deserve a multi cylindered bike yet. Will be an extension to the commuterish based bikes..(is that why Honda tags all its bike with CB names?)
Now this will probably be a looker too.. considering that the bike has been under the magic knife for about a couple of years… Much lesser than that the cbr150R has been… But yeah it exactly won’t be as good a performer in the ninja league. A probable single digit difference in its torque range. The difference in the torque would be as much compensated with 15k times of its price. So if its 9ps slower.. Its price would be 9x15k cheaper than ninja.. Now do your math and let me know how many birds and eggs can Honda kill with this? And how many years of longevity does it get with this?

Why not both the bikes..
* the 150 would eat into the tad bit higher priced and higher margin indigenous bigger Honda’s share.. After all looks sell in India!

Still think 150 makes sense for this market/Honda…. Well best of luck…!

RIP Mojo, ZMR, Bajaj and TVS big bike plans.. And possible RIP The smaller duke.. (if it remains 125)

  1. another 150 c.c.??? why dont the people sitting in japan understand that the indian consumers are readt for more. Inspite of the plight of the roads and fuel we have bikes in the range of 800-1800 c.c. and that there is huge gap or should i say “black hole” from 250 c.c. to 800 c.c. I think the philosophy of all the jap bike manufacturers to put in Jap CEOs for their Indian branch will backfire as soon as TVS or Bajaj come up with a twin cylindered 300 or 300+ c.c. monster like Mahindra…..

@people in Japan: Try and understand the plight of Indian Bikers….

    1. Which is why I said that it won’t come to India… Its too radical for us!

The bigger one would come, but it wouldn’t be as exciting as the ninja..

  2. A 250 cc, single cylinder making about 24 Ps and at an estimated price of 1.5 lakhs will put it between the R15 and the Ninja 250R.

It makes sense from a Business perspective. But I would also like to see the CBR 150R in India too

    1. So do I! But I really doubt Honda would do it with the milking the segment strategy of theirs….

A 150 would be just a margin below in price from the bigger Honda with no great performance gain.. Sure shot invitation to cannibalism if they look similar.

  3. the pulsar 200 story waiting to happen if they do that….. i would say if anything is launched at 150c.c. make it at around 18-19ps comparable to R15 and th3 p220 and launch the 250 with approx 26-28ps at price of 1.8l, filling the gap between r15, p220 and that of ninja 250r.

P.S: not taking into account the REs

    1. Why not just a cheap 250 that kills everything.. The r15, the zmr and the ability for our desi folks to create a world class 250 in that price range… Ofcourse eventually Bajaj and TVS would still get to the 250 cc segment.. But they will have to do something extremely radical to upset Honda in this game!

      1. if yamaha comes out with a 250 it wont be cheap….
hero honda will not be able to design a whole unit for better power after the de merger as their R&D suffers a lot….
regarding bajaj and tvs…. bajaj might be able to do it but I am under the impression that they have reliability issues and as far as TVS is concerned even the 180 if ridden for 15-20 minutes at higher rpms shakes your innards to such an extent that you might not be able to hold a coffee mug after that (a little exaggeration)….
thats why i think it is a long time before a cheap, reliable, yet powerful 250 can be designed…

      2. Which is what I meant by Longevity .. 🙂

  4. Another 150cc ? I’m so bored of seeing countless 150cc bikes available. A good 400 will be the perfect bike for Indians. Its not insanely fast and you can exploit its power.

    1. I agree… Infact I hope the ktm 400 comes to India in a new look… And priced around 2 mark!
