I will begin with a story… This is story of a tailor in mumbai named Pullu back in 1995…. Pullu was an expert in tailoring… A few weeks before every festival, he would have 100s of customer lined up telling him why they need their dress urgent and on a higher priority as compared to others. Some of the reasons were genuine… Just like everyone else’s!
Pullu had two sons.. (don’t brand me a sexist for not introducing a female character yet)
His elder son Rishi(20) and the younger Hemant(16)
Rishi was a bright chap.. Almost as great as his dad in tailoring skills. Pullu was worried about Hemant though… He even tried to force Hemant into learning but it usually ended up a mess. Hemant was undoubtedly hard working, but the fit and finish of his work was very very ordinary.
Circa 2010, a lot has happened in these 20 years.. Luckily no new kids\characters though! Pullu has retired… Rishi is now a famous tailor.. Charges a premium of 15% over others to do similar work… Hemant has been trying too hard to learn the skills… His skills have improved.. But still pretty ordinary. It appeared as if knew his forte would never be his ability to match the high standards. So he adopted a easy way.. He offered a price lower than 15% of what market demands. This is probably why Rishi had to lower his margin for his expertise to 15% as against 20% earlier.
Now comes a critical time… Its an important time of the year…YOU (yes you!) have an exclusive piece of fabric… Priced at a handsome 6 figures for a piece of cloth just about enough for your shirt… Whom would you give this piece of cloth to?
Rishi, the experienced and confirmed skilled worker despite his small premium.. Or
Hemant, the lesser experience but an avid hard worker yet had average fit and finish skills.. ?
Or Pullu who has lost the touch of finesse and age has caught up with him? Still relying on his age old tools and catering to a small segment in the market..
Part 2 after your answers..
