Mojo gets a new look?

Yesterday, there was an social networking update by a ‘PR’ group closely affiliated with Mahindra. It mentioned some things about taking a ‘pure power machine’ to the moon.

I commented on it, and within minutes the post was removed. So the two logical outcomes possible are:
1) This was written about the Mojo and hence they wanted to remove the post,
2) This was NOT written about the Mojo, and hence they didn’t want to confuse people

For (our) convenience, due to hardly any information surfacing about this bike.. Let’s assume #1 is true.
More so, chances of #2 being true are remote. Its usual for people to post ‘comments’ on such updates. So what if my comment was the fact that some of the ideas are lifted from a biking forum.
Some of them mine!

What is means is:

  • Black Styling,
    3D Chiselled logo,
    Vertically stacked twin projector lamps,
    Split seats,
    Clip-on handlebar.
  • Given below are my views on the changes from the Mojo we know.

    Black Styling
This is a welcome change. The Mojo looked awkward to say the least in that golden frame. The use of the different colours splattered everywhere made it look a bit weird too. Then again there are people who loved it as well. I hope Mahindra uses this as an additional colour scheme. Atleast during the launch. Heck call it a midnight edition Mojo

    3D Chiselled logo
    Hmm, a monogram eh?
Well no comments here on how it will help the bike, BUT you are a new brand in two wheelers and so maybe flashing the signage is a top priority item. So go ahead.

    Vertically stacked twin projector lamps
NICE! This is a welcome change, breaths a life of freshness into the scene. This also reminds me about a discussion I had with one of my industrial design student friend, Satyajit (Nitrosatya)
On why manufactures resort to such a stacked head light assembly. More on that later, and perhaps by Satya himself (hopefully)
Twin Projector, nice! I hope its made to gell well with the bike.

    Split seats
This is again, one of those small silly stuff which has defined the ‘performance’ biking scene of India.
    Baah, no comments here either!

    Clip-on handlebar
This is a tricky one! Clip-on on a street fighter themed bike would look funny. Unless you make them like the ZMR and end up making it feel like a straight handle! A clip-on, in my view has to go on to a track focussed bike. So if there’s a fairing, atleast a bikini fairing then it would still look good. But on a street fighter its tough to carry. So best of luck.

Would these, and a few subtle changes make it worthy a buy, especially now with the CBR250R lurking around?
Honestly, I don’t see M&M being able enough to beat the CBR on its looks front. No doubt the spec sheet though is very juicy and appealing. Even if compared to the CBR.
So if the plan is to make a similar full faired bike, I am not sure if its a good idea.
A semi faired bike, purpose built for long distance riding and having streetfighter looks would probably have a better chance to survive. Not everybody likes faired bikes.
I agree, most do, and the ones who do, would rather flaunt the Honda badge than experiment with a M&M badge at the same price point.

Also remember nothing stops Honda from making a streetfighter from the CBR250r and price it cheaper. If they do they would still be canabalizing on the CBR sales too! So its still safer waters for Mahindra to do its mojo!

So to answer in short, M&M has to price the bike well, give a brilliant value proposition with like engine warranty AND road side assistance etc for this ‘premium’ machine. Then yeah it would sell!

I hope the company wakes up and starts with a bang. Go Mahindra go!
    Competition is always good!

    1. It would have been interesting to note the scooter sales of Mahindra had Honda not had a waiting list extending to 5-6 months

Selling motorcycles is a totally different ball game.. I bet that Mahindra is clueless after the “Stallio” debacle. The only reason to launch the MOJO would be due to self pride, financially it makes no sense at all.

      1. It does make atleast a little sense Payeng. Ofcourse they won’t ever be able to sell as many of Mojo.
The idea is to pull the crowd into the showrooms.
Infact I believe, it has to do something radical even beyond Mojo to ensure the visitors now shell money for their bikes.

Had the Mojo come earlier, it would have probably helped the sales of stallio.

Don’t write them off yet.. 😉

        1. A Yamaha showroom might be able to pull the crowd because of an exotic R1 standing for display but it won’t sell a middle class guy any bike unless it also has a 150 cc R15 in the showroom.

You probably get my point now that getting a mojo to pose in the showroom or financing Engine’s participate in 125 cc Moto GP as Mahindra Racing engg. won’t help Mahindra sell any Stallio.

Mahindra bigwigs needs to rethink their strategy and what USP can it offer to the customer.

Why on earth will a customer not buy a 100 cc Splendor/Passion/Discover or a 250 cc CBR250R and go for a Mahindra..??
